How to Choose the Right Power Cable

Choosing the right cable requires consulting technical documentation and considering the installation environment. Selecting the correct cable type is crucial for ensuring electrical safety, installation efficiency, and long-term operation.

Confirm Voltage Rating

The first step is to confirm the system voltage. Low voltage cables are used for 300/500V, 450/750V and 0.6/1kV systems. Medium voltage cables are used for 6/10kV, 8.7/15kV and 12/20kV distribution systems.

Confirm Installation Environment

Installation environment affects cable structure. Different installation environment may require different sheath, armour or fire safety options. UV resistance, oil resistance, water resistance or mechanical protection will be required in harsh environments.

Select Conductor Material

Copper conductors have higher conductivity than aluminum conductors. Copper conductor cables are suitable for compact installation and high-performance systems. Aluminium conductor cables have good cost-effectiveness and high conductivity-to-weight ratios. Aluminium conductor cables are used for large-size power distribution and long-distance projects.

Confirm Insulation and Sheath Material

XLPE insulation has good electrical and thermal performance. PVC has excellent electrical properties, robustness, chemical stability, and cost-effectiveness. LSZH materials have low smoke and halogen-free performance.

Check Armour and Screen Requirements

Armour is recommended for underground, direct burial and mechanically exposed installation. Medium voltage cables usually require conductor screen, insulation screen and metallic screen.
